Prairie Mock Newbery Club: information and first list for 16-17

Tonight is SOAR to Creek night for our future 5th graders.  In the library we have information about the Mock Newbery Book Club (I might need a better name for this club) as well as other cool information about Creek opportunities.

What is the Prairie Mock Newbery Club?

Club members use a version of the Newbery Book Award criteria to pick the books we think are the most distinguished in 2016.  Will we guess any of the titles selected by the actual Newbery Committee?  I hope so!

What will we do at our meetings?

Club members will read books from several lists and come to meetings to talk about them.  We will discuss the qualities of the books, including theme, plot, and characters.

When will we meet?

Our 16-17 building schedule is still in development but we likely will meet during lunch or possibly as an afterschool club. Depending on member interest we will meet 1 or 2 times a month.

What books could I read this summer to be ready for the first meetings?

Here are the 5 titles we will use to kick off our club meetings in August & September.

For more about these titles including descriptions, author interviews and readings, websites, and more visit  http://www.teachingbooks.net/ql3dyer.

Interested in joining this club?  Send a note to Mr. Cox, Creek Teacher-Librarian, to get updates and reminders -  erncox@crprairie.org

Sneak A Listen

The Literary Lab Podcast is beginning production this week.  We (Creek students and teachers) are excited to bring you into our conversations about books and writing. Take a listen to a bit of the conversation from Episode 0 with Miss Hanzelka.

This podcast is being built as we produce it.  We still need a nifty podcast logo. I am still figuring out Soundcloud, getting into iTunes etc.

February Guys Read

We voted for When the Game Stands Tall by Neil Hayes. This is the true story of the de La Salle high school's 150 game football winning streak. We also picked the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. Our activity this month was table hockey with plastic cups, spoons, and dice!

Creek Guys Read Picks "The Dead Gentleman" for February

January, 2016: We picked "The Dead Gentleman" by Matthew Cody to discuss at our February meeting

The Dead Gentleman is a wild ride between parallel New York City timestreams—1901 and today. Eleven-year-old Tommy Learner is a street orphan and an unlikely protege to the Explorers, a secret group dedicated to exploring portals—the hidden doorways to other worlds. But while investigating an attercop (man-eating spider) in the basement of an old hotel, Tommy is betrayed—and trapped. And it's then that his world collides with that of modern-day Jezebel Lemon, who, until the day she decides to explore her building's basement, had no bigger worries than homework and boys. Now, Jezebel and Tommy must thwart the Dead Gentleman, a legendary villain whose last unconquered world is our own planet Earth, a realm where the dead stay dead. Until now. Can two kids put an end to this ancient evil and his legions of Gravewalkers?

Did you know the Creek Library catalog now lets you search for "Guys Read Approved" books?

Look at how many of us recommended great books this month!
